The first visit to the ophthalmologist: what to expect?

A preventive eye examination is recommended at least once a year. Even without obvious complaints, it makes it possible to detect the disease in the early stages and prevent complications. To make your visit informative and comfortable, we offer a clear plan of how to prepare and what happens during the reception.

Before the visit:

What to take with you to the appointment?

  • A document confirming your identity.
  • Previous examination results and medical reports, if already from a doctor.
  • Glasses and/or contact lenses, if worn.
  • A list of medications you are taking and the names of eye drops, if used.

How to prepare?

  • If you use soft contact lenses, it is better to wear glasses or take a container with a solution with you.
  • Plan transportation: if the pupils will be dilated, it is not recommended to drive after the appointment.

Take sunglasses with you (after instilling the drops, the pupil will be sensitive to light).

How is the diagnosis and reception?

  • Autorefractometry is performed and with the help of tests, the visual acuity of each eye is determined separately, then with lens correction.
  • Non-contact measurement of intraocular pressure is carried out.
  • Ultrasound of both eyes is performed to assess the condition of the internal structures of the eye and adjacent tissues.
  • The doctor will take a medical history: ask for complaints, chronic diseases, previous operations, eye injuries, hereditary factors and a list of medications.
  • Next, with the help of a slit lamp, the doctor will examine the anterior part of the eye and conduct an ophthalmoscopy – an examination of the fundus to assess the condition of the optic nerve disc, retinal vessels and its periphery.

Additional examinations (prescribed as needed):

  • OCT (optical coherence tomography) is a detailed visualization of the retina and optic nerve.
  • Perimetry – determination of the field of vision.

Final consultation:

After the examinations, the doctor explains the results, determines the diagnosis and draws up a treatment or observation plan, provides all recommendations and answers questions.

Practical tips and expectations:

  • The duration of the basic examination is usually up to 60 minutes, if additional studies are needed, the visit can take up to 1.5 hours.
  • Most procedures are painless and non-invasive.
  • After instillation of dilating drops, blurred vision and photophobia may last for several hours. Plan your time and transportation accordingly.

Tips after the review:

  • Follow your doctor’s orders and recommendations for treatment or follow-up examinations.
  • If you have started using new glasses or contact lenses, give yourself time to adapt and contact us if you feel any discomfort.
