How to improve vision by watching cartoons? Biofeedback in ophthalmology

Ophthalmology, especially pediatric ophthalmology, is rapidly evolving: specialists continuously improve existing vision treatment methods and develop new ones. One of the effective technologies at the intersection of neurophysiology and ophthalmology is biofeedback (Biofeedback — biological feedback).

This is a “new level” of hardware-based vision therapy. As part of comprehensive treatment, Biofeedback significantly enhances its effectiveness, as demonstrated by the monitoring of brain electrical activity (EEG). At the “Prostir Zoru” clinic, we use an electrode-based model — the most accurate method.

What is it?

In simple terms, it is “training” the body to use its abilities correctly. The patient “sees” in real time what is usually barely conscious (for example, lens focusing or the tension of certain muscles).

How does it work?

The device uses electrodes to read signals from the brain’s visual cortex. If the patient focuses correctly, the game or cartoon on the screen continues. If concentration or focus is lost, the image fades or stops.

Why does it work?

On one side, it may look like “just watching cartoons,” but on the other — it supports the formation of new neural connections. Achieving the goal, meaning a clear image, positively stimulates the brain and is associated with the release of dopamine. In this way, the brain “learns” and reinforces correct visual processing patterns.

If standard methods can be compared to group physical education, where everyone performs the same exercises, then biofeedback is like a personal brain trainer.

Thanks to electrodes, the device instantly gives the child feedback: “This is how you see correctly!”. This helps the brain form new neural connections faster and consolidate the result.

For example: the results of a 12-year-old patient on the first and last day of sessions. “Before” is shown above, “after” below. The graph clearly demonstrates how concentration and attention have improved.

Indications:

This device has two modes: stimulation and relaxation. Each mode has its own indications for use and a different mechanism of action. The stimulation mode aims to activate the visual centers and encourage the “inactive” eye to work (in cases of amblyopia). The relaxation mode helps reduce excessive tension of the ciliary muscle and overall psycho-emotional strain.

In general, Biofeedback is a “fitness for the brain,” where instead of weights we use light and color, and instead of a trainer we use electrodes that ensure accurate feedback and prevent the brain from “cheating.”
